WELCOME TO A VIRTUAL TOUR OF HISTORIC
BOVAIRD HOUSE
ENTRANCE

- This possibly was the true summer kitchen as per Amelia
Chisholm’s memoirs
- It now houses a McLaughlin cutter with lap robe and
bear skin and assorted farm implements (wooden shovel,
rake, hay fork, crosscut saw, etc…)
- It also contains the original bake oven used by Peter
Chisholm – it very possibly was free standing when
his log cabin was just to the north of this site and was
later incorporated into the kitchen addition. Note the
baker’s ‘peel’ used to remove hot items
from the oven - it is hand-carved from one piece of wood
- Fire was built in the oven until the right temperature
was attained (you tested it for bread by inserting an
arm in the oven for 20-30 seconds without burning the
hair on your arm). The ashes were scraped out and items
to be baked added as the oven cooled
- The dry sink is Norfolk County (circa 1850) and has
some restoration work. This is how the dishes would have
been washed without indoor plumbing. Soap was made from
animal fats and lye
- The second room is now used as an office but originally
it might have been used by the hired help and for additional
storage
- These rooms seem always to have had a plastered ceiling
and whitewashed walls and originally a floor of stone
flags
